Sometimes it is useful to round numbers to the nearest 1000 in order to obtain a good looking report. That is, to have many small width columns and get them all on the same page when printing.

Formatting cells to show thousands

  1. Right click on the cell you want to format
  2. Select Format cells….
  3. From Category choose Custom
  4. In the Type area write #,##0, ;[Red](#,##0,);-

You have now the format you need. Additionally it turns the font red when the cell contains negative numbers.

The drowback of this formatting is that when the numbers are added manually the total may differ from the exact one, as the numbers behind the rounding are hidden away.
